Sal Rodriguez recently visited Glenn Barr’s studio and came away with these amazing photos that paint a truly unique portrait of one of my favorite artists. Glenn is currently preparing for his next solo show at the new Inner State Gallery in Detroit.

Ron Zakrin - Still Life with Drum Machine

Ron Zakrin is quickly becoming one of my favorite Detroit artists. His lush color palettes, textured canvas’ and unique characters, with their beautiful otherworldly glow, are hard to turn away from. He easily pulls you into his own mystical realm, and once there you won’t want to leave.
323 East in Royal Oak will be hosting Ron’s next solo show Still Life with Drum Machine. An exhibit heavily influenced by Zakrin’s love of electronic music. Check out the opening on Friday, May 18th and be amazed!

“Detroit’s Kill Taupe Doesn’t Fear Rabbit Reapers…or Keith Harring Slapfights”

Don’t Fear… drops tonight on 1xRun! Well, tonight’s post was going to be all about the Reaper Rabbit paintings dropping on 1xRun… but while they were being released I was out drinking Atwater Lager from a can and watching America’s Next Top Model, (yes really, it’s one of the most important social experiments of our time!) and they’ve already sold out. Congrats, and thank you, to the lucky 3 that snagged one!

If you have a few free mintues you’d like to cram with some random nuggets of awesomeness, I gave the fellas at 1x an interview in which I come out as an afficianodo of tacos and talk about getting into a slap-fight with the corpse of Keith Harring. You can check it out here.

Glenn Barr is rounding up some of your favorite illustrators, lowbrow, pop surrealism & graffiti artists for Lyric 2012, opening this Saturday at 323 East in Royal Oak!
From 323 East:
On the heels of the last March’s inaugural Lyric exhibition at 323East Gallery, Glenn Barr is back to curate the second incarnation of his pervasive musically themed group exhibition Lyric 2012. With an expanded roster of local and international artists ranging from lowbrow, pop surrealism, graffiti and illustration, this show is set to be the largest group exhibition to date at the Metro Detroit gallery named Best of Place to Buy Art (for the 3rd Year in A Row!) by Real Detroit Weekly. For this exhibition Glenn had one simple request for each artist: Each piece of art must be 12 x 12 inches, paying homage to the timeless beauty that can fit on the cover of a vinyl record. Each artist has been given free reign to draw inspiration from their favorite artist, album, song or lyric and put their personal interpretation to canvas.
“Music and its lyrics can always stimulate our emotions as well as leave us contemplating a visual narrative. Artists have always been known to use lyrics as inspiration and with this have created some of the greatest works in the world. This exhibition will illuminate the artist’s personal transcription from a song lyric to canvas.” - Glenn Barr

Urban Roots, a group show celebrating the rise of urban farming, opened this past Saturday at 323 East in Royal Oak. An eclectic group of artists displayed an equally eclectic body of work featuring subjects that were fresh, colorful, and locally grown.
The exhibit will be up until the 5th of October, so make sure to swing by and check it out!
Next up… A new group show at 323 East.
Urban Roots and 323East are teaming up for a group art exhibition where artists interpret Detroit’s Urban Farming movement in the present and what this landscape may look like in the future. As the local fall crop arrives at outdoor markets 323East and the team at Urban Roots will highlight these works with a unique gallery exhibition. The exhibition will encourage local farmers and artists to celebrate the creation of food and art that represents both the city and its citizens who grow locally.

Lace & Poison: The Opening of Beautiful Monstrosities

Beautiful Monstrosities opened Saturday night at 323 East in Royal Oak and man, was it impressive. Detroit artists Audrey Pongracz and April Segedi packed the gallery with Victorian themed work that was simultaneously ethereal and grotesque.
Their work balanced each other nicely and everywhere you turned there was a feast for the eyes. Audrey’s paintings seemed to glow under the galleries lights and there was so much beautiful and intricate detail work to take in on April’s pieces.
This show is one not to be missed! I think the maggot baby is still giving me nightmares. You can catch Beautiful Monstrosities at 323 East now through August 10th.
