N.C. Winters, unabashedly one of my favorite slingers of paint, is opening his solo show Abandoned Menagerie tomorrow night at Gallery 1988.
Turtles of the teenage-mutant variety, Gremlins and Mario will collide at the opening as Winters’ new work explores iconic characters in pop culture and imagery that influanced him as a child. Judging from the awesome teaser pics he’s posted this is one opening that you would be a complete and utter fool to miss!N.C. Miss the opening of Day of the Dead at Starkweather Arts Center? Fret not chum, for now you can enjoy all its splendor from the comfort of your desk chair, living room sofa, or wherever your laptop is plopped, with this handy video from cable access station WBRW!

Thanks again to Heather Hansma for curating such a fun show. You can also check out a video of that nights Hand in the Ocean performance here.

Had an amazing time at the Reclaimed opening this weekend. Perfect Laughter brought together a really solid group for the show! Don’t just take these slightly fuzzy cell phone pics and my word for it though. Treat yo self to a beer & burger at Sports and then take a stroll down to Rivers Edge Gallery before November 18th to check it out. Slaw’s Fly Now / Pay Later! is also showing in the upstairs gallery!

A sneak peek at some of the beautiful work for tomorrows Reclaimed opening at Rivers Edge Gallery. From L to R: Ryan Weiss, Taro Takizawa, Emi Slade, Perfect Laughter, Chad Davis & Jeremiah Britton

Lace & Poison: The Opening of Beautiful Monstrosities

Beautiful Monstrosities opened Saturday night at 323 East in Royal Oak and man, was it impressive. Detroit artists Audrey Pongracz and April Segedi packed the gallery with Victorian themed work that was simultaneously ethereal and grotesque.

Their work balanced each other nicely and everywhere you turned there was a feast for the eyes. Audrey’s paintings seemed to glow under the galleries lights and there was so much beautiful and intricate detail work to take in on April’s pieces.

This show is one not to be missed! I think the maggot baby is still giving me nightmares. You can catch Beautiful Monstrosities at 323 East now through August 10th.
